Bird Flu Spreads to Antarctica, Threatening Penguins and Ecosystem
Avian flu, specifically the deadly H5N1 virus, has reached the Antarctic for the first time, posing a significant threat to isolated populations of penguins and seals that have never been exposed to the virus before. The virus was found in brown skuas on Bird Island, part of the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Scientists are concerned about the potential "catastrophic breeding failure" of the region's fragile wildlife populations, as many species are unique to the Antarctic and have not encountered bird flu viruses previously. Ongoing disease surveillance programs are recommended to identify new and emerging pathogens.
