J.J. Spaun won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and revealed Brandt Snedeker told him he was the 'odd man out' when informing him he wouldn’t receive a Presidents Cup captain’s pick, a snub Spaun had anticipated after finishing 10th in qualification; he then used the omission as motivation to win.
JJ Spaun clinched the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a final-round 67 to finish 15-under, denying Manuel Elvira who faltered on the 18th after choosing to lay up and missing the green; Elvira’s costly double-bogey ended his shot at a first European Tour win, while Spaun claimed his first title outside the United States.
Rory McIlroy shot 72 in round three at Wentworth, carding an eagle on the 18th to reach 11-under and two behind the 13-under leaders Manuel Elvira and Filippo Celli, who closed with birdies on the final hole. McIlroy eyes an eighth Race to Dubai title and a second Wentworth crown, with blustery conditions shaping the chase.
