Oregon's Maverick Senator Packwood Dies, Marking End of an Era
Former Oregon Republican Sen. Bob Packwood, a blunt, maverick figure who rose quickly before being forced from office amid a sexual harassment scandal and a battle over his diaries, has died. After leaving the Senate he started a lobbying firm Sunrise Research Corp., remained active in policy debates, and in later years advocated centrist ideas such as nonpartisan elections in Oregon.
