
Lithium Shows Promise in Reversing Alzheimer's Disease
Research shows that endogenous lithium levels are significantly reduced in the brains of individuals with MCI and AD, with lithium sequestered in amyloid plaques. Lithium deficiency accelerates AD pathology in mouse models, promoting amyloid and tau accumulation, neuroinflammation, and cognitive decline. Supplementing with a low-ionization lithium salt, lithium orotate, effectively reduces amyloid and tau pathology and improves memory, suggesting that maintaining brain lithium homeostasis could be a promising strategy for preventing or slowing AD and age-related cognitive decline.
