Bregman hurt by freak check-swing foul, Cubs weigh rest vs Marlins

Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman sustained a cut under his eye and swelling to his left cheekbone after a freak check-swing foul in Sunday's Reds game. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays and a CT scan; manager Craig Counsell said there’s no concussion yet and a good hospital report will guide whether he can play in the Cubs’ upcoming series with the Marlins or be held out briefly. The Cubs still have a Wild Card path as the race unfolds toward Tuesday’s games.

Bregman Faces Slump as Cubs Fans Boo Under Big-Contract Pressure

Alex Bregman acknowledged a poor start to his Cubs stint, going 0-for-5 in a loss to the Giants and hearing boos at Wrigley as he posts a .243/.327/.342 line with five homers in 65 games. He says he must execute better, especially with runners in scoring position, while the $175 million contract and fan frustration amplify the spotlight and the window to turn things around remains open.

Red Sox face uphill climb after Bregman exit, eye bold offseason move

Boston’s offseason has stalled after Alex Bregman left for the Cubs, leaving the Red Sox without any major free-agent signings while rivals upgrade. ESPN insider Jeff Passan suggests they’re not dead yet but must land a big move to keep pace in the AL East, with Bo Bichette quoted as a prime option and other pivots like Nico Hoerner, Brendan Donovan or Isaac Paredes on the table. They could also pursue trades that might require sacrificing top prospects, so Boston must act soon to avoid widening the gap to its peers.
