Manhattan Goes Bus-Only on World Cup Days to Ease Stadium Traffic
New York City plans to convert 42nd Street into a bus-only corridor and ban cars around Penn Station on World Cup match days to prevent congestion as up to 1.2 million visitors visit the area. Ticketholders will be steered to mass transit via $98 NJ Transit round-trips from Penn Station or $20 shuttle buses from Grand Central, Columbus Circle, and Port Authority. The plan also designates bus-only lanes on parts of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue, creates queues outside Penn Station up to four hours before matches, and restricts large deliveries in Midtown during game times; exemptions apply for smaller vehicles and emergency services. A gridlock alert day will be issued to encourage walking or transit.
