Carney’s Liberals eye slim majority as three by-elections unfold
Mark Carney’s Liberals could clinch a slim majority in the Canadian House of Commons if they win three by-elections on Monday—two in the Toronto area (Scarborough Southwest and University‑Rosedale) and one near Montreal (Terrebonne). With the Liberals holding 171 of 343 seats, wins in Toronto would push them past the threshold, while Terrebonne remains a toss-up; the party has also benefited from five defections (four Conservatives and one NDP). Polls show the Liberals ahead of the Conservatives, and Carney has steered the party toward a more centrist stance, a shift that could delay any federal election until as late as 2029.
