UI Band Leader Dies After Heat-Related Collapse at Kinnick Stadium
Derek Phillips, a University of Iowa student and mellophone section leader for the Hawkeye Marching Band, died Tuesday after suffering a heat stroke and cardiac arrest during a football game on Saturday. Phillips collapsed in extreme heat at Kinnick Stadium, where temperatures reached 95 degrees with heat indexes above 100. Despite emergency response efforts, he suffered severe brain damage and was removed from life support. The university canceled the band’s halftime performance due to heat, and officials are providing counseling and planning to honor Phillips’ memory for the rest of the season.
