Astros Rule Out Correa Return This Season

Houston manager Joe Espada said Carlos Correa will not rejoin the Astros this season after ankle surgery in May, with the daily rehab workload proving too burdensome. The 2026 campaign is effectively over for Correa, eliminating any late-season return, while Houston will continue with Peña at short, Paredes at third, Altuve at second, Walker at first, and Alvarez at DH. Offseason roster moves and potential trades could reshape the infield and open paths for 2027.

Astros weigh Correa shift to second base on return

The Astros are weighing moving Carlos Correa to second base when he returns from left-ankle surgery, a plan that could pair him with Jeremy Peña at short and Isaac Paredes at third while Yordan Alvarez is in left, or place Correa at third with Peña at short and Altuve at second when Alvarez serves as the designated hitter. Correa has not played second professionally, but the team believes his baseball IQ could make him viable there; Altuve’s struggles at second are part of the consideration. A late-season trial, including live BP and a potential Triple-A rehab assignment if healthy, is being eyed in Seattle and Sacramento.
