Reds DFA Friedl to Clear 40-Man Space for Spiers
The Cincinnati Reds designated outfielder TJ Friedl for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for right-hander Carson Spiers, who will join Louisville after the move as Chase Burns lands on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain. Friedl, who debuted for Cincinnati in 2021 and had a breakout year in 2023, has slumped to a .179/.259/.256 line with a 44 wRC+ in 2026 and was optioned to Louisville before being DFA’d. Spiers hasn’t pitched in the majors in 2026 after elbow surgery and owns a 5.69 ERA in 117 MLB innings (2023–25). The Reds are expected to non-tender Friedl after the season; he could pursue free agency but would forfeit some guaranteed money if he declines an outright assignment.
