The Cannes Film Festival opened with Michael Douglas receiving an honorary Palme d’Or and Catherine Deneuve making a surprise appearance. The opening ceremony was hosted by Chiara Mastroianni, and the jury was introduced by Ruben Ostlund. Douglas was given a standing ovation and Uma Thurman presented him with the honorary Palme. Deneuve, the face of the official poster, paid homage to Ukraine before declaring the festival officially open. The world premiere of Maïwenn’s Johnny Depp-starrer Jeanne du Barry followed the ceremony.
