Alberta Separation Support Dips to 23% as Referendum Nears, Poll Shows
With the October 19 referendum approaching, a new CBC poll indicates that support for Alberta separation has declined to 23%, while 72% of Albertans favor remaining in Canada. This drop from spring figures suggests shifting public sentiment, potentially influenced by improved relations with Ottawa and federal leadership. The campaign is now focused on voter mobilization rather than persuasion, as opinions appear entrenched. Meanwhile, secondary questions on the ballot regarding immigration restrictions have drawn sharp criticism from local media, with some outlets arguing the proposals target non-permanent residents and echo historical discriminatory practices. The debate has also highlighted concerns among immigrants about their legal status and belonging in a potential independent Alberta.
