US Cyclospora Outbreak Expands as Produce Scrutiny Increases

Health officials report a growing cyclospora outbreak in the US with 1,645 domestically acquired cases and more than 5,100 under review, concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast (notably Michigan). Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite causing cyclosporiasis, typically spread via contaminated fresh produce or water rather than person-to-person. Symptoms usually begin about a week after exposure and include prolonged watery diarrhea, cramps and fatigue; treatment is the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and hydration. The FDA is tracing produce through the supply chain, but no specific item has been confirmed. Prevention includes thorough handwashing and rinsing produce, though washing may not remove all contamination. Cases are reported across more than 30 states and are expected to rise through August.
