Google is shutting down its Business Messages feature in Google Search and Maps on July 31, 2024. This feature allowed customers to chat with businesses via text. Starting July 15, 2024, new chat conversations will no longer be possible, and existing chats will be phased out. Google advises businesses to add a phone number to their listings or use Reserve with Google as alternatives.
Google's shares rose by 3.7% after CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company will integrate conversational AI features into its search engine, which could help answer queries faster. Pichai denied that chatbots were a threat to Google's search business and said that the opportunity space is bigger than before. Search-related revenue accounts for roughly half of Google's overall revenue. Smaller AI models will become more useful over time, enabling companies to create their own or users to run the algorithms on their own personal devices.
