The Dominance of Ultraprocessed Foods in Children and Teens' Diets
A study analyzing almost two decades of data has found that children and teens in the United States now get over two-thirds of their calories from ultraprocessed foods, such as frozen pizza and packaged snacks. Ultraprocessed foods accounted for 67% of calories consumed in 2018, up from 61% in 1999. These foods are often high in sugar, salt, and low in fiber, posing concerns for children's health. The study also revealed a decrease in the consumption of healthier unprocessed or minimally processed foods. Efforts to reduce sugary drink consumption have been effective, but more needs to be done to address the consumption of other unhealthy ultraprocessed foods.
