Taiwan's Indigenous communities, who were once viewed with suspicion as potential sympathizers with the mainland's Communist authorities, are now seen as a bulwark against Beijing's territorial ambitions. The government has made efforts at reconciliation, including recognizing Indigenous languages, setting aside seats in the legislature for Indigenous representatives, and offering preferential treatment in university entrance exams. However, true equality remains far off, and discrimination and anxiety still exist within Indigenous communities.
