Global Authorities Crack Down on Dark Web Crypto Laundering, Seize Millions in Bitcoin
Europol, with the help of other law enforcement agencies, has taken down ChipMixer, one of the dark web's largest cryptocurrency laundromats, and seized $42.2 million worth of Bitcoin. The platform was allegedly used by cybercriminals for money laundering activities related to drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, ransomware attacks, and payment card fraud. ChipMixer was also used by ransomware groups like Zeppelin, SunCrypt, Mamba, Dharma, and Lockbit. The app may have been used to assist one of the biggest crypto hacks of 2022, where hackers targeted bankrupt crypto exchange FTX and drained it of $446 million in tokens.
