Australian Bishop Saunders Sentenced to 6.5 Years for Abuse of Indigenous Men
Former Bishop of Broome Christopher Saunders was sentenced to six and a half years in prison on October 7, 2026, for sexually abusing two young Aboriginal men. The 76-year-old cleric, who resigned in 2021, was convicted in August of one count of rape and 12 counts of indecent assault. He will be eligible for parole in February 2031. The sentencing follows a trial where prosecutors alleged he groomed victims using church funds and alcohol. The Vatican’s canonical investigation into Saunders is set to resume, with Rome to decide on his remaining clerical status.
