Hawaii doctor found guilty of attempted manslaughter in cliffside assault on wife
A Maui-based anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, was found guilty of attempted manslaughter (extreme mental or emotional disturbance) for a March 2025 attack on his wife during a cliffside hike in Honolulu. Prosecutors say he tried to stab her with a syringe and hit her with a rock to render her unconscious and push her off the cliff; she survived thanks to passing hikers and testified at a three-week trial. Konig claimed self-defense, saying his wife grabbed him and hit him first. The jury convicted on the lesser charge, which carries up to 20 years in prison; his sentencing will follow.
