Antidepressants Linked to Gut Microbiome Shifts in Depression
Two large cohorts found that SSRI/SNRI treatment in major depressive disorder is associated with a lower abundance of the gut bacterium Clostridium sensu stricto 1, with this association specific to these antidepressants and not seen with other psychotropic meds; findings suggest antidepressants may reshape the gut microbiome and point toward microbiome-targeted interventions, though causality and longitudinal effects are not established.
