Zuckerberg's Metaverse Unveils Lifelike Avatars and VR Interviews
Mark Zuckerberg showcased the improved version of his metaverse project, featuring lifelike avatars called Codec Avatars. In a virtual reality interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, the avatars accurately replicated their real-life counterparts, creating a sense of being in the same room. The avatars are created through extensive scans of a user's face, which are used to form a computer model and transmitted as an encoded version over the wire. While the demonstration was not live and used individuals who were not very expressive, the technology has the potential to be a gamechanger if it can be made more accessible to everyday users through smartphone scans.
