Japan's ispace lunar lander crashes on moon during historic landing attempt.
Japanese startup ispace's attempt to make the first private moon landing failed after losing contact with its Hakuto-R Mission 1 lander, which probably crashed on the lunar surface. The company listed on the Tokyo stock exchange two weeks ago, and its shares had risen seven-fold since then. Japan has set a goal of sending astronauts to the moon by the late 2020s, but has had recent setbacks, including the destruction of its new medium-lift H3 rocket and the failure of its solid-fuel Epsilon rocket.
