Nearly 30 participants of the Middlebury Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont have tested positive for Covid-19, despite individual efforts to prevent infection. The conference's Covid-19 policies rely on individuals to manage their own testing and to voluntarily mask and isolate themselves when symptoms appear. The virus spread among the conference's 272 participants, prompting some to leave the campus and others to isolate in place. Attendees who left were able to participate remotely, and prorated tuition, room, and board are being offered. Some attendees have criticized the conference for not prioritizing the safety of disabled or chronically ill individuals.
