Supreme Court Weighs Free Speech and Immigration Law
The US Supreme Court heard arguments on Monday in a First Amendment challenge to a federal law that makes it a crime to "encourage" unauthorized immigrants to come to or stay in the United States. Several justices suggested that the law would chill constitutionally protected speech. The law was deemed unconstitutional by a panel of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and a divided three-judge panel of the 10th Circuit, in Denver, last year.
