3mdeb released Dasharo v0.9, an open-source firmware stack based on openSIL and Coreboot, for the MSI PRO B850-P WIFI, marking the first open-source firmware for a modern Ryzen AM5 desktop motherboard. The port supports Zen 4 Phoenix CPUs, UEFI Secure Boot, and has been tested with Windows 11 25H2 and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, following earlier work porting the Dasharo stack to an AMD EPYC Gigabyte board.
Libreboot 26.01-rc1, a new release of the open-source boot firmware, adds support for several older systems including the Lenovo ThinkPad T580 and HP Pro 3500 Series, along with improvements and bug fixes, with a stable release planned by the end of January.
The GNU Boot project, a fork of Coreboot/Libreboot aiming to provide free boot firmware, has removed certain non-free elements from its codebase in preparation for its v0.1 release. This includes AMD CPU microcode updates and motherboard ports that contained proprietary code. The affected motherboard ports were for older AMD Opteron server motherboards, which are favored by open-source enthusiasts despite being outdated. The project's commitment to free software led to the exclusion of these components to ensure the purity of its open-source ethos.
The MSI PRO Z690-A WiFi DDR4 motherboard, which supports open-source Coreboot and Dasharo, is now available for sale at its lowest price ever of just over $150 USD. Consulting firm 3mdeb has been working on porting Coreboot and Dasharo to the motherboard, and has provided binary releases for easily flashing Dasharo onto the motherboard. The code has also been upstreamed into Coreboot, but is still contingent upon Intel FSP blobs. This is a good deal for those wanting to experiment with running Coreboot/Dasharo as an alternative to proprietary BIOS implementations.
