US Postal Service Implements New Security Measures to Combat Mail Theft and Carrier Robberies.
The US Postal Service is replacing 49,000 arrow locks with electronic versions and installing 12,000 hardened blue collection boxes in high-risk areas to prevent robberies and mail thefts. The move comes after nearly 500 postal carriers were robbed last year, with weapons used in most of the incidents. The Postal Service is also cracking down on other ways criminals are targeting the service, including counterfeit postage and identity theft. Postal officials seized more than 340,000 packages with counterfeit postage and more than 7.7 million counterfeit stamps in the last fiscal year.
