India's Same-Sex Marriage Debate: Government Opposes Legalization.
The Indian government has dismissed court appeals to legalise same-sex marriage as "urban elitist views" and has called for parliament to debate the matter instead. The government has already opposed the appeals on the grounds that same-sex marriages are not "comparable with the Indian family unit concept of a husband, a wife and children". The case will be heard by a five-judge bench from Tuesday and will be live-streamed on the court website and on YouTube. At least 15 appeals have been filed with the court in recent months stating that without legal recognition, many same-sex couples could not exercise rights such as those linked to medical consent, pensions, adoption or even club memberships.
