Emmys Shake-Up: Five Categories Move Off Primetime Telecast
The Television Academy will move five Emmy categories from the Sept. 14 NBC primetime telecast to the Creative Arts ceremonies on Sept. 5–6, trimming the main show to 19 awards to make room for performances and speeches. The categories—writing for a variety series; directing and writing for a limited/anthology series or movie; and supporting actor/actress in a limited/anthology or movie—will be awarded in advance, in a bid to revitalize the broadcast. Mariska Hargitay will host the telecast, which is produced in collaboration with NBC and Jesse Collins Entertainment; the Academy says the change is aimed at delivering a more engaging, entertaining Emmy night while continuing to honor work across all guilds.
