When Himalayan Floods Strike, Warnings Must Cross Borders
An ice-rock avalanche in Nepal’s high Himalayas triggered a devastating flood that killed around 1,400 and left thousands missing, destroying 12 hydropower plants and washing away roads and villages across Nepal and Tibet. The disaster exposed how quickly high-altitude triggers—not just rainfall or rising rivers—can unleash floods, revealing gaps in early-warning systems and the need for anticipatory action and cross-border data sharing to warn downstream communities. Regions from Kashmir to Sikkim are already seeing rising glacial lake risk, underscoring that warnings must travel beyond national boundaries to save lives as climate-driven hazards intensify.
