Navy weighs naming CVN-81 after Trump instead of Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller

CNN and NBC News report the U.S. Navy is considering naming the Ford‑class carrier CVN‑81 after President Donald Trump rather than honoring Doris Miller, the Black WWII sailor who manned an anti‑aircraft gun at Pearl Harbor; naming a sitting president would be unprecedented, and Miller’s push for recognition—including a possible Medal of Honor and a future ship named for him—continues as the ship nears completion around 2034, with no comment yet from the White House or Pentagon.

Navy weighs renaming Pearl Harbor hero carrier, eyes Trump as alternative

The U.S. Navy is weighing a renaming plan for the Ford-class carrier CVN-81, originally set to honor Black Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller, with internal discussions hinting at renaming the ship after President Donald Trump—an unprecedented move for a sitting president. The Navy is also considering honoring Miller on a different warship and pursuing the Medal of Honor for Miller, though Congress must authorize the award. The keel-laying ceremony is approaching later this year, and the ship isn’t expected to be delivered until 2034, amid broader reviews of how ships are named.
