East Village Truck Crash Claims 15-Year-Old's Life
A 15-year-old girl, Daria Serkov of Manhattan, died and a 16-year-old girl was hospitalized after a 57-year-old truck driver turning right struck the bicycle they were riding in the East Village at East 14th Street and First Avenue around 9 p.m.; the driver stayed at the scene and no arrests were reported. Both teens were taken to Bellevue Hospital, with the younger girl pronounced dead and the older suffering a leg injury. The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is investigating; the case comes amid Mayor Mamdani's revised Vision Zero plan advocating safer street design on First Avenue, where advocates say protected bike infrastructure is needed to prevent future crashes.
