US job market to grow modestly by 2035, led by healthcare and tech amid automation
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 5.9 million new US jobs from 2025 to 2035 (a 3.5% rise, taking employment from roughly 170.3 million to 176.2 million), with gains strongest in healthcare, technology and renewable energy as AI and automation boost demand for data analysis, cybersecurity and software development while reducing many administrative, office-support, sales and certain production roles. The biggest percentage declines are in word processors and typists (around -34%), data-entry keyers (-25.5%), and telephone/switchboard operators (roughly -27% to -26%), among others. However, employment gains are led by high-growth occupations such as nurse practitioners, solar photovoltaic installers, data scientists, wind turbine service technicians, and medical/health services managers.
