Houston Astros outfielder Daulton Varsho underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left wrist, ending his 2026 season. Varsho, now a free agent, enters the market with a career-worst statistical line and a recent injury, likely limiting him to short-term contracts.
Houston acquired Daulton Varsho from Toronto for left-hander Spencer Arrighetti, giving the Astros a premier center fielder with a left-handed bat and Gold Glove defense to complement Yordan Alvarez; Arrighetti, 26, is on the injured list with a 4.66 ERA in parts of three MLB seasons and is under team control through 2029, while Toronto adds pitching depth with multi-year control in the deal as part of its deadline retooling; CBS Sports grades the swap B for both clubs, noting Varsho's offensive inconsistency but high defensive floor and the potential to boost Houston's lineup and defensive efficiency.
The Blue Jays and Astros are nearing a deal that would send Daulton Varsho to Houston in exchange for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, with Toronto reportedly paying part of Varsho’s $10.75 million salary. As the Arizona Diamondbacks prepare to face the Toronto Blue Jays in their first series after the All-Star break, the trade that sent Daulton Varsho to Toronto is being evaluated. So far, the Diamondbacks have come out ahead in terms of wins above replacement value (WAR), with Varsho's defensive contributions and Moreno's potential as a catcher being key factors. However, Gurriel has been the standout offensive player in the trade, making his first All-Star Game appearance. The two teams have similar records, and Varsho will face his former team for the first time in the upcoming series.

The next two weeks will be a measuring stick for the Blue Jays as they face tough opponents, including direct competitors for wild-card spots.
