Gabon's $500 Million Debt-for-Nature Swap Sparks Climate Finance Debate

Gabon has entered into a $500 million deal to refinance its foreign debt, with the aim of using the freed-up funds to expand protected coastal areas and combat illegal overfishing. The deal, brokered by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), is the second-largest of its kind and the first on mainland Africa. Critics argue that such "blue bond" agreements only provide a fraction of the promised funds for conservation efforts and divert attention from the need for debt forgiveness and greater action by wealthy nations to address climate change.
