The Growing Threat of Chronic Wasting Disease in US Wildlife
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), colloquially known as zombie deer disease, is a brain disease affecting deer, elk, and moose populations in Kansas and Missouri. The disease, which forms a plaque over the animal's brain, has been slowly spreading and has the potential to decimate deer populations. While there have been no recorded cases of CWD affecting humans, it is not recommended to eat infected deer. Hunters are encouraged to bring in their kills for free testing to help track the disease and prevent its spread.
