Delaware's Sussex County Sees Boom in Retiree Migration as Florida Costs Rise
More than 40,000 people have moved to Sussex County, Delaware, since 2020, driven by low taxes and coastal amenities. This influx has increased the county's population by 17%, five times the national average, while Delaware's 65-plus population grew 23%, the highest rate in the nation. Retirees are increasingly choosing Delaware over Florida due to rising costs in the Sunshine State and Delaware's lack of sales tax. However, the rapid growth is straining local infrastructure, leading to traffic congestion, healthcare shortages, and concerns about the loss of small-town charm.
