Hourslong Standoff Ends with Suspect's Death in Iowa Hill Case
After an hourslong standoff in rugged Iowa Hill, Derek Spencer—wanted for murder and other felonies—died in a gunbattle with Placer County deputies as wildfires closed in; authorities say he killed 76-year-old Cheryl Macy, rammed a stolen car, fired at deputies and a sheriff’s helicopter, and eight SWAT teams were involved before his body was recovered with firearms nearby.
