Pope Francis reportedly used a highly offensive slur for gay people during a private meeting at the Italian Bishops’ Conference, sparking shock and controversy. Despite his previous public statements of respect towards gay individuals, he firmly opposed allowing celibate gay men to train for the priesthood and allegedly suggested expelling gay people from seminaries. The Vatican has not yet commented on the incident.
West Virginia University's head men's basketball coach, Bob Huggins, has been suspended for the first three regular season games of the 2023-2024 season and his annual compensation will be reduced by $1 million after he used derogatory and offensive language on a Cincinnati radio show. The university will partner with its LGBTQ+ Center to develop annual training sessions for all athletics coaching staff to address all aspects of inequality, and Huggins will be required to meet with LGBTQ+ leaders and the Carruth Center to better understand the mental health crisis facing marginalized communities.
