U.S. Passports Go Fully Digital by 2027, with a Gold-Heavy Redesign in 2028
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that first-time U.S. passport applications will shift to a fully digital process by the end of 2027, eliminating the need for in-person appointments and physical photo booths. The new system, integrated into the AI-powered America.gov platform, allows users to upload photos, pay fees, and track status in real time. Additionally, a redesigned passport featuring a larger gold eagle emblem and historical artwork will launch in 2028.
