A sister duo rides Amtrak’s California Zephyr for 53 hours from Chicago to California in a roomette. Daytime travel is comfortable and the dining car meals are surprisingly good, with scenic views from Illinois to Colorado and beyond. But nighttime sleep is difficult in the bunk setup and sharing a bathroom adds to the roughness. They’d consider another trip, but only shorter or with a larger room and private bath.
Tastee Diner in Silver Spring has closed due to the site being bought by Roadside Development for a new residential building. However, the original dining car will be incorporated into the new construction, although it is unclear if it will be part of a working diner or just an architectural feature. Tastee Diner's owner, Gene Wilkes, sold the diner due to health problems and is pleased that the site will be in the hands of people who respect everything he has put into it. Roadside Development specializes in adaptive re-use projects and has not given a timeline for the project.
