
Self-Destructive Cells: Guardians of the Genome
Researchers have discovered instances of programmed DNA elimination (PDE) in various species, where organisms purposefully eliminate portions of their genome. PDE has been observed in about 100 species, including worms, parasites, insects, and songbirds. In a recent study, scientists found that a nematode worm eliminated one-third of its genome, specifically targeting repetitive stretches of DNA that do not contribute to its survival. This suggests that PDE may be a mechanism to combat genetic parasites, such as transposons. Additionally, PDE may help streamline genomes and improve efficiency in different life stages. The prevalence and reasons for PDE are still not fully understood, but researchers believe it may be more widespread than currently known.
