Drive-Photos handoff: Google Photos backup takes the lead after August 10, 2026

From August 10, 2026, Drive for desktop will stop backing up photos to Google Photos. Google Photos itself remains active, and the backup process will move to Google Photos directly. If you used Drive for desktop to auto-back up computer folders, switch to backing up those folders in Google Photos (via the website or mobile/web app), then verify the backups. Casual users who back up only from mobile aren’t affected; those with large photo libraries should plan the transition and maintain an extra backup elsewhere.

Google's Solution to Drive's Missing Files Issue

Google has released an updated version of the Google Drive app for Windows and macOS to resolve missing file issues for a subset of Drive for desktop users. Users are instructed to install the latest version of Drive for desktop, run the app, click the Drive for desktop button while holding the Shift key, and click "Recover from backups" in the Settings menu. The recovery process may take some time, and recovered files will appear in a new desktop folder titled Google Drive Recovery. Google has also provided instructions for file recovery via the command line and for users who disconnected their account or removed their local Drive cache.
