Flyers’ bold Carlsson bid falls short, signaling Philly’s new era of ambition

Philadelphia GM Danny Brière offered Leo Carlsson a front-loaded five-year, $90 million contract that would’ve made him the NHL’s highest-paid player, prompting Anaheim to match and keeping Carlsson with the Ducks. The bold move signaled Philly’s hunger for a true No. 1 center, though the Ducks matched and the Flyers must press on with a strong young core (Porter Martone, Denver Barkey, Alex Bump, Matvei Michkov, Tyson Foerster) to raise their ceiling while maintaining cap flexibility. The offer included four first-round picks as compensation, sending a message to the league that Philly will swing for the fences; with Matthews and McDavid timelines looming, the Flyers have time to build toward contention and pursue another big fish down the line.

Philly bets big on Carlsson with $90M offer sheet

Philadelphia signed 21-year-old center Leo Carlsson to a five-year, $90 million offer sheet, forcing Anaheim to decide within seven days whether to match or accept four first-round picks as compensation if they don’t. Ducks derail Oilers as McDavid, Draisaitl injuries pave way to series win

Edmonton’s bid to return to the Cup Final ended in the Western Conference First Round with a 5-2 Game 6 loss to Anaheim, as star forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were not at 100 percent. Draisaitl returned for Game 1 after missing the final 14 games of the regular season; McDavid suffered an ankle injury in Game 2. Edmonton’s defensive lapses, struggle on the penalty kill, and goaltending changes compounded the issues, while Anaheim relied on Lukas Dostal in goal and a productive power play (8-for-16) to close out the series.
