"Mars Spacecraft Observes Massive Dust Storm Whisking Away Tons of Grains"
The UAE's Hope mission has captured new footage from Mars, showing significant changes in surface dust thickness after a regional dust storm in January 2022. Using an infrared spectrometer, the spacecraft observed heat signatures to measure dust levels in various regions, finding that some areas experienced a net removal of dust up to 340 micrometers, while others had net deposition up to 120 micrometers. The findings, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, highlight the dynamic nature of Martian dust reservoirs and their ability to quickly transport large quantities of dust.
