Unpopped Ears on Flight Lead to Rare Cancer Diagnosis for 22-Year-Old Mother

Aida Burkins, 22, was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma after experiencing persistent ear pressure and bleeding following a flight to Chicago. Despite initial dismissals by doctors who attributed symptoms to altitude sickness, Burkins underwent multiple tests and biopsies. CT scans revealed extensive tumor involvement in her cervical lymph nodes and nasopharynx. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, with doctors reporting significant tumor shrinkage. Burkins, a mother of two, hopes to be cancer-free and emphasizes the importance of listening to persistent symptoms.

The Science Behind Ear Popping on Flights

Airplane ear, also known as ear barotrauma, is caused by a difference in air pressure between the inner ear and the surrounding environment during air travel. This can lead to discomfort, pain, and a feeling of clogged or popping ears. Factors such as sinus congestion, respiratory infection, or allergies can exacerbate symptoms. To prevent airplane ear, it is recommended to swallow, yawn, blow the nose, or chew gum to equalize the pressure. Over-the-counter decongestants or nasal sprays may also help. Wearing special ear plugs during descent can slow down the pressure change and give the ears more time to adjust. If symptoms persist after the flight, medical attention may be necessary.
