A guide to entering EarthBound (2026) says don’t start with EarthBound Beginnings: it’s grindy and vague; play EarthBound first (Switch Online includes both EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings), then, if you want the trilogy, tackle Mother 3 via a fan translation or a reproduction cart since there’s no official English release. Note the naming: Beginnings is Mother, EarthBound is Mother 2, and Mother 3 never released officially in English.
Shigesato Itoi, known for his work in advertising and collaboration with Haruki Murakami, pitched the idea of a modern-world role-playing game to Shigeru Miyamoto at Nintendo. Despite initial skepticism, Miyamoto recognized Itoi's dedication and formed a team to create the game. The result was 1988's Mother (Earthbound Beginnings), a charming and creative RPG that laid the foundation for the beloved Earthbound series. The game is now available to play on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
