Venezuela quake shows Android alerts at work—can Apple match the coverage?

During Venezuela's June 24 quakes, Android phones with Google's Android Earthquake Alerts sounded warnings seconds before the shaking, thanks to a crowdsourced detection network using accelerometers; iPhones stayed silent absent a government-funded feed. Apple’s Enhanced Safety Alerts can relay warnings only where official sources exist, highlighting a gap Google’s system fills in countries without government networks. The article also explains how accelerometers detect P-waves, how to enable Android alerts, and urges preparedness with drop, cover, and hold on when alerts appear.

Android Alerts Give Venezuela Seconds of Warning Before Quakes

Google’s Android-based Earthquake Alerts system uses accelerometers in billions of phones to detect P-waves, quickly estimate an earthquake’s location and magnitude, and push alerts to devices in the affected region before the stronger shaking arrives. During Venezuela’s June 2026 quakes (7.2 and 7.5), Google said 11.4 million people received warnings, with alerts expanding as the event evolved and about 1.4 million of the most urgent “Take Action” warnings issued. The system works even where a country lacks a government network and has expanded to nearly 100 countries since 2021, powered by Android on roughly 70% of smartphones. It’s too early to tell if lives were saved, but seconds of warning can give people time to drop, cover and hold on.

Samsung's Advanced Earthquake Alerts Outperform Google's System

Samsung is developing its own earthquake alert system within One UI 8, offering features like warning previews, logging, customization based on seismic intensity, and displaying emergency contacts and shelters, which could enhance safety features on Galaxy devices and may be especially useful in regions where Google’s system isn't available.

Google Launches Earthquake Alert System for Android Users in India

Google has launched its earthquake alert system for Android devices in India, using smartphone sensors to detect tremors. Developed in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority and the National Seismology Center, the system provides early earthquake alerts in local Indian languages. Two types of alerts, "Be Aware" and "Take Action," are sent based on the magnitude of the earthquake and the level of shaking experienced by users. The alerts bypass notification settings and provide safety recommendations. Google claims that the alerts often reach users before shaking occurs. The company already issues flood alerts in India and introduced earthquake alerts in California in 2020.
