Nairobi Construction Collapse Traps Workers in Eastleigh Amid Looting and Rescue Delays

A multi-story building under construction collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district on October 23, 2026, leaving at least seven people missing. The structure, which had more than 10 upper floors, pancaked into a massive pile of concrete, trapping workers and residents. Rescue efforts were severely hampered by looters who blocked access routes, forcing police to deploy tear gas. While some workers escaped, others remained trapped in the basement and ground-floor shops. Officials confirmed the building lacked a certificate of occupation, despite having construction approval, raising concerns about regulatory enforcement.
