Padres coach detained by ICE at El Paso airport while returning home
Padres roving catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at El Paso International Airport while traveling for work. DHS says Pirela entered the U.S. from Venezuela in 2014 and overstayed his permission in 2018; he does not have valid work authorization, though his brother provided a permit showing it runs 2024–2029. The Padres said they are gathering information and have no further comment. Pirela, based in Peoria, Ariz., has worked in the organization since 2024 (bench coach in Lake Elsinore, then catching coordinator in 2025) and travels to its minor league affiliates. He remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
