A new survey indicates that while voters generally accept candidates of different races and genders, they show significant preferences for younger and Christian candidates, with transgender candidates facing the most resistance.
Hasan Piker argues the progressive movement isn’t dead after mixed primary results in Wisconsin and Michigan, praising the ground game and sustained momentum while acknowledging establishment consolidation. He contends electability remains a key motivator for voters and that a broader, more diverse working-class identity will define future progress for democratic socialists, even as wins remain uneven.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly defeated Francesca Hong in Wisconsin’s Democratic governor primary, a win seen as establishment-backed and likely to shape the November race against Trump-backed Rep. Tom Tiffany. The contest highlighted tensions over electability, with Hong strongest in more educated areas but underperforming in others, and turnout running lower than hoped amid heavy TV ad spending by Crowley and outside groups.
Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary has become a grief-strained contest over electability: progressive Francesca Hong sits as the front-runner and argues she can unite a broad coalition to beat a Trump-backed Republican, while establishment-aligned David Crowley warns her nomination could cost the general election. The race features scrutiny of Hong’s past social media posts, a push by some allies to portray her as a risky choice, and ongoing questions about campaign discipline and unity within the party as voters weigh affordability policies, safety, and how to appeal to swing voters in a purple state.
Michigan's pivotal Democratic Senate primary pits progressive Abdul El-Sayed against moderate Haley Stevens in a high-stakes test of electability in a purple state, with heavy outside spending and high-profile endorsements shaping the race as voters weigh Medicare-for-All versus kitchen-table pragmatism and what the party’s direction should be ahead of November.
In Michigan’s high-stakes Democratic US Senate primary, Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens sparred over money in politics, outside spending led by AIPAC-backed groups, and who is best positioned to defeat Republican Mike Rogers in November, with exchanges touching on campaign finance reform, DTE funding questions, and wealth disclosures alongside their policy visions.
NYT analyst Nate Cohn argues that Graham Platner’s blend of progressive, anti‑establishment populism—focused on economic change rather than identity politics—helped him win Maine’s Democratic primary by appealing to moderates and rural voters; his success suggests Democrats could broaden their appeal by adopting a Platner‑style populist approach (e.g., Medicare for all without a full socialist agenda, and avoiding culture-war framing), a path Ossoff has also pursued, though tensions with moderates and progressive purists could complicate its adoption.
June’s slate of Democratic primaries across six states will reveal whether the party sticks to electability in key House battlegrounds or shifts toward a more progressive posture on Israel, Gaza, and immigration, with Maine, Colorado, New York and Nevada illustrating intra-party divisions as donors and advocacy groups shape candidates for November.
Trump has become unusually interventionist in GOP primaries, endorsing roughly 95% of House incumbents and a large share of Senate hopefuls to steer nominations toward candidates he deems more electable, and even pressuring some rivals to drop out or switch endorsements. The tactic aims to protect governing majorities and improve general-election viability, but it has sparked friction with MAGA supporters and occasional pushback, plus moments of restraint (such as staying out of Texas’ Senate contest) that illustrate a delicate balance between influence and leverage.
The Democratic Senate primary in Texas between Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico has become a bitter contest shaped by racial dynamics and questions of electability, underscoring the challenge Democrats face in building a broad, multiracial coalition to win statewide in a red-leaning state.
Nikki Haley's argument that she was the only one who could beat President Joe Biden fell flat as voters didn't buy into her electability claims, leading to her withdrawal from the presidential race. Despite citing polls showing her ahead of Trump in general election matchups with Biden, she failed to gain traction among Republican voters and ultimately faced a significant deficit against Trump in the delegate race. Her focus on electability and attempts to position herself as a candidate for generational change were overshadowed by Trump's stronghold on the GOP, leaving her unable to build a large enough coalition to defeat him.
Despite Nikki Haley's emphasis on electability in her campaign, polls show that GOP voters prioritize shared values and fighting for people like them over a candidate's ability to defeat Joe Biden. This shift in priorities may be influenced by the perception of Joe Biden as a weak candidate and the influence of Donald Trump's base, who remain loyal to him despite concerns about electability. Additionally, Trump's false claims about the 2020 election contribute to his supporters' confidence in his electability.
Despite Donald Trump's significant win in the New Hampshire primary, his victory may be masking underlying concerns about his electability for the White House. While Trump remains popular within the Republican Party, there are doubts about his ability to appeal to a broader electorate, particularly in key swing states. This raises questions about the party's strategy for the upcoming presidential election.
President Biden, who has experienced several public falls, is taking measures to prevent further incidents, including working with a physical therapist to improve his balance, wearing tennis shoes instead of dress shoes, and using a shorter staircase on Air Force One. Biden's team is concerned about the impact of these falls on his electability, as a recent poll showed that three-quarters of Americans consider him too old to serve a second term. Despite these efforts, Biden has still faced challenges with balance, as seen in recent stumbling incidents.
Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, has positioned himself as more electable than Donald Trump, but there are growing questions about his own ability to win over independent and suburban voters. His hard-line stances, including on abortion, may repel the very voters he promises to win back. Electability has emerged as one of the early pressure points in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, with DeSantis's rivals seeking to tap into Republican frustration with recent election disappointments to urge a new face for the party in 2024.
